Dr. Sonia Trigueros recalls that there was never a singular moment when she consciously decided to become a scientist—according to her mother, the passion for science had always been a part of her. However, her early academic journey was far from smooth. As a child, she struggled in school, and those around her—teachers, peers, and even family members—often doubted whether she would ever make it to university. “I wasn’t the best in class, not by far,” she shared candidly, acknowledging the skepticism that surrounded her potential.

Despite the challenges, what remained unwavering was her innate curiosity and drive for innovation. She remembers inventing something for the first time at the age of ten, a reflection of how deeply embedded her passion for science was from a young age. While she didn’t fully grasp the academic expectations necessary for university at the time, she knew she wanted to understand the world in a more meaningful way.

As she approached adulthood, Dr. Trigueros became acutely aware of the obstacles ahead. Determined to overcome them, she transformed her approach to learning—moving away from rote memorization and instead striving to truly engage with and understand the material. This shift in mindset and a relentless work ethic eventually earned her a place at the University of Barcelona, where she pursued a degree in biology. It was there, for the first time, that she truly found joy in every subject she studied—a turning point that not only validated her passion but set her firmly on the path to becoming the scientist she was always meant to be.

Navigating Academia and Nanoscience

Fortune favored her early on, as she secured a PhD position—a milestone that marked a turning point in her journey. It was during her doctoral research at the University of Barcelona that she first experienced the thrill of working hands-on in the lab, developing original ideas, and engaging in meaningful discussions with her principal investigator. This, she realized, was the kind of real science she had always envisioned.

Eager to broaden her horizons, Dr. Trigueros pursued postdoctoral opportunities abroad, motivated by a curiosity to understand how science is perceived and practiced in different parts of the world. It was here that she met James Martin, and together, under the umbrella of the Oxford Martin School, they co-founded and co-directed the Oxford Martin Institute for Nanomedicine.

A self-proclaimed “water animal,” she is passionate about swimming, diving, and anything that connects her to water. Walking—often 10 kilometers a day—is her go-to stress reliever, and she also enjoys time at the gym and engaging in various sports. Travel remains a meaningful part of her life, especially long personal trips to Africa and Cuba.
