We spoke to Carolyn McCall for her unique insight into the business world.
What kind of careers did you have in mind when you were young?
I was brought up abroad and there was a TV program called Police Woman with Angie Dickinson that I really enjoyed and I remember thinking that I would want to do something like that because she was a really strong and dynamic personality. I was brought up in a family where both my parents worked and I just wanted to work too, I wanted to be independent and I knew I had to work in order to be so.
What was your first job like?
My first job was as a teacher. I did postgraduation after my degree and went to Holland Park Mixed Comprehensive where I taught secondary school. However, they were joining other schools and a lot of well-experienced teachers were losing their jobs due to the merger and I didn’t like that so I quit. In order to cut costs, they were offering less experienced teachers like me a job and I hardly had any experience and I thought it was wrong and if that was what teaching is about, then I don’t want to do it. My first real job was at the Guardian where I started as a planner.
What inspired you into developing a career in business?
I was at a newcomer’s lunch at The Guardian and Peter Preston who was the editor at that time had a long conversation with me about why we didn’t have a Sunday newspaper. I remember coming out of that conversation thinking ‘This is amazing!’ because everyone was talking to each other and I couldn’t believe that an editor wanted to talk to me; a 24-year-old planner. It was the culture at the Guardian that inspired me the most.
What comes next for you in your career and at ITV?
For ITV, we have big things coming our way. We have started a lot of foundations. We launched Britbox with BBC which is a new video subscription service. It is the best of British content from the past. So if you want to see every episode of Vera or Endeavour or Fleabag, it will all be on Britbox, so it’s a one-stop-shop for depth and breadth of British-originated content. It’s quite bold, going into a market that Netflix has already been in for eight years but it’s not Netflix.
