Cindy Eggleton
In today’s time, everywhere we turn, we are presented with the undeniable power of women. Despite so many differences — age, race, socioeconomic background — Women are striving towards one common cause – giving back to society. And one thing’s for sure; no one can slow them down. Thus, laying a bright spotlight on one such woman leader who along with her organization Brilliant Detroit is dedicating their lives towards building kid success families and neighborhoods, Cindy Eggleton operating as the Co-Founder and CEO is an influential leader which the world deserves right now.
From the Scratch
Cindy Eggleton comes from a family that rose from poverty. Her mother was in a foster home until age 12, but despite these challenges, Cindy’s home was always filled with love and learning. From her dedicated parents, she learned the values of grit and resilience and was instilled with the belief that one is put on this Earth to do better. This guidance motivated her to become a first-generation high school graduate and to create Brilliant Detroit to help others achieve similar success.
Encouraged by her parents to pursue higher education, Cindy developed a passion for psychology, driven by a dual interest in biopsychology and traditional psychology. Early in her college career, she won a National Science Foundation award, which was significantly influenced by a supportive professor. However, the most important force in her education was her father, who wanted something better for his children.
Towards Brilliant Detroit
During her previously led education efforts at a local foundation in Detroit, Cindy observed what strategies were effective and which were not, realizing that early intervention in a child’s life could break the cycle of poverty across generations. Through her work in early childhood education, she met her co-founders, Jim and Carolyn Bellinson. From the outset, they shared a vision to transform traditional models. The statistics were stark: only 14 percent of children in Detroit were reading at grade level, and over 30,000 kids lacked early learning options. They identified the core issue not as a lack of programs but as a lack of coordination and accessible resources in one place. Combining the Bellinsons’ business acumen with Cindy’s expertise in education and impact, they launched Brilliant Detroit.
Brilliant Detroit in a Nutshell
Established in 2016, Brilliant Detroit aims to create kid success neighborhoods, where neighbors gather for fellowship, activities, and learning, ensuring school readiness and providing essential support for families. This unique model repurposes underutilized housing stock to create early childhood and family centers within neighborhoods, ensuring that the community has agency—an approach they describe as “with, for, and by neighbors.”
As the CEO
During a brief interview opportunity with Cindy we asked her to elaborate on how she runs Brilliant Detroit as both the Co-Founder and the CEO. For which she shared – “My responsibilities focus on the excellence of our operations in Detroit as well as our growth to new markets”. She added – “My work is high level as I rely on my staff to focus on more day-to-day operations. My days mainly consist of meeting with new potential program and community partners as well as funders”.
Through the conversation she also spoke on how she is always thinking about strategy and how all elements of their work are aligning now, all thanks to the efforts put in by her team. She also gives credit to their team’s effective collaboration that is built on communication and shared values, and how as a combined unit they always keep this in mind when engaging with new partners.
Expanding Horizons
In 2024, Cindy Eggleton and Brilliant Detroit reached a pivotal milestone by committing to 24 neighborhoods in the city. Cindy is thrilled to see the realization of a dream envisioned eight years ago. However, this achievement marks only the beginning for their Kid Success model. This year, Cindy and team are looking forward towards the launch of Brilliant Cities, an initiative aimed at extending their successes to other cities. The announcement of the next cities they will collaborate with is forthcoming.
